Getting someone's IP address on an IRC network that masks host names

This tutorial is intended to give insight into IRC and keeping yourself secure. Please do not exploit other people or cause damage. Let it be a lesson to keep your chatting safe.

Some networks, like blabbernet mask IP address' to make chatting safer, however this method is not fool proof because all addresses will look the same, and every time you connect you will have a different address, according to the server and everyone on it.

So how do we get around it?

Assuming that the person who's ip address you want to get knows your nickname, lets begin.

The first step is to disconnect, check your DCC settings, if you can identify the port number that you will send files through, do so.

Change your all your details including your nickname, email, user name. Reconnect to the server with a nickname that the target person would like to chat to, like model-25-f or something, you need to figure this one out by yourself.

In your command line type: netstat
You should get output looking like this

If there are many connections in this list, try closing some of your applications(like Gnutella clients) that make connections automatically.

Now connect to the server and start chatting to your target, don't give yourself away now :)

Offer the person a picture of you via DCC, the image could be something like this : ). Send it as a BMP if you have a fast connection to keep the connection open long enough for you to do a netstat.

While the image is sending, do a netstat again and try to find the new entries, remember the IRC server will be one of them, so avoid this one. After the image is done sending, disconnect immediately and resume your former identity.

The "Foreign address"in the netstat command will give you their IP.

Note that the above image is assuming this will work, and you wont make yourself look like a complete idiot. Some smarter people use proxies to get their files, so this method will not work for them.
